FIRST RESPONDER PROGRAMME
Immediate bystander CPR and deflibrillation within 3-5 minutes results in a survival rate of about 50% of victims of witnessed sudden cardiac arrest / Heart Attack.
For every Minute without CPR, survival chance from a cardiac arrest decreases 7% -10%.
When Bystander CPR is provided, the decrease in survival is more gradual and averages 3%-4% per minute from collapse to deflibrillation. Defibrillation, providing an electrical shock to restore a heart to its normal rhythm, is the only known therapy for ventricular fibrillation (Heart Attack). Unfortunately, for every minute that passes without defibrillation, a victim's chance of survival decreases by 7-10%.
In only 8 or 10 minutes without defibrillation, death is nearly certain.
This program aims to make emergeny defibrillation widely accessible to cardiac arrest victims. If you would like to prepare your self for a possible emergency, take part in the next available Certified Heartsaver Course.
